These are raw, rich with life and emotion fragrances. Her perfume sensibility goes beyond the goth aesthetics. The painting may be viewed here, but I want to talk about the perfume as a standalone work of art, its honesty, and, yes: its dark seduction.Īlexis Karl is a Brooklyn-based perfumer, artists, and teacher (you can read more about her on IndiePerfumes). Perfumer and artist Alexis Karl created her Requiem For The Immortal based on artist Ken Weaver's painting of the same name, and his take on Faust's Mephistopheles in all his dark seduction. Of course, there was also Glory, a straight up deity, but you know she must have had some kind of a sinister arrangement with Roja Dove:Īll kidding aside, we all have different ideas of immortal beings, good and bad. Glory (Clare Kramer) and minions on season 5 of Buffy. Mark Metcalf as The Master, Buffy Season 1. When I think of the various immortals and undead beings in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (still my favorite supernatural/superhero show of all time), I doubt any of them smelled that great.

The way that Ben Aaronovitch manages to capture the heart and soul of London is outstanding, the only novels I have read that comes close to getting this right are the equally impressive Sixty One Nails (by Mike Shevdon) and Neverwhere (By Neil Gaiman). You will find yourself buried in the book as you walk around, bumping into random objects and/or people (not recommended folks) and you will keenly feel the absence when your attention is reluctantly dragged away. Told from the first person perspective of Peter, River of London is one of those rare novels that instantly grabs your attention and becomes almost impossible to release from your grasp. Then one night, on a cold, wet night while investigating a murder he finds himself taking a witness statement from someone who was dead but quite vocal, bringing him to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Peter Grant was just a probationary constable in the Metropolitan Police Force and faced a life in the drudgery of the Case Progression Unit (doing paperwork so real coppers don't have to). Rivers of London is an urban fantasy novel by Ben Aaronovitch. Keep watching my blog for more book reviews! Book blurb:įor maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. Try checking this out, or read more reviews to find if this is the book that caters to your taste. And perhaps that is why I could complete this book in between a hectic schedule. An easy read, it has all the masala (not Bollywood ones) that should make a mystery book a success. This is an okayish book and only recommended for mystery and thriller buffs or those looking for typical books in this genre for a change. I want to read at least one book in the popular series, and if it is a thriller murder mystery, good good! And so, if I have completed this book (for I only write reviews of completed books), this must be one of the few good ones (mind it, not the best though). There are so many unread 5%, 10%, 15%….books in line, since now very very few books hold my interest. How many I read in this duration? Oh, do not ask me. So, to come back, to the book in question, this was the only book I completed in the month of Feb ’19. It has been months since I have written a book review because I did not feel like opening a laptop and writing book reviews in the format I do with image, book blurb, and brief about author is easier for me on laptop, perhaps that is to do with generation gap □ Seems like being a mom, has already aged me and I want to do nothing in my spare time other than to read books (ah yes, sleep too, most important). Herod Sayle - but not before he has to go through a gruelling and intensive training programme. After becoming the youngest ever spy to be recruited by MI6, Alex finds himself in the midst of a high energy mission revolving around a certain multi-millionaire named Mr. Alex finds himself plunged into the depths of the MI6 spy world, along with all the gadgets, villains and adrenaline fuelled action that this entails. In the pages of Stormbreaker we learn of seemingly ordinary fourteen-year-old Alex Rider, whose life becomes incredibly extraordinary, and considerably more dangerous, after the suspicious death of his uncle. Stormbreaker is the very first novel in the Alex Rider series, a collection of books that left the imagination of my ten year old wannabe-spy self reeling for hours. Negative epiphanies can certainly be disruptive, but so can positive epiphanies. The notion of ‘dysepiphany’ is also not to be confused or equated with the notion of disruptive epiphany. Footnote 8 For a brief moment you come to have an important new insight, but the vision fades quickly and you return to your old ways, more or less unaffected and unchanged. The latter, Chappell explains, occurs when an epiphany proves only temporarily successful. Footnote 7Ī dysepiphany is to be distinguished form a ‘failed epiphany’. Footnote 6 Another example she gives is that of seeing a particularly bleak film such as Amadeus, which left her deeply downcast when she first saw it. These count as a kind of ‘dysepiphany of what we did not already know, and naturally have no wish to know, about pain or discomfort or malfunction’. Later in the book she also discusses episodes of illness, when our body is broken, injured or diseased. Those are standard dysepiphanic experiences. Footnote 5 Chappell gives the example of realizing that in truth somebody has never loved you, or that you can no longer believe in God. If a positive epiphany feeds the psyche and ‘makes us glad to be alive’, Footnote 4 a negative epiphany does the opposite: it is ‘profoundly bleak and upsetting, sapping our psychic resources rather than refreshing them’. Kelly's story has been retold numerous times, and the lead role cast with a dizzying array of actors (including Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger). "True History" is one of the more arresting attempts, in part because it treats the outline of the tale as raw material for flights of fancy, seemingly modeled on psychodramatic spectacles like " The Sacrifice," " A Clockwork Orange," " Apocalypse Now" and " The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," and anchored in intriguingly retro Freudian situations and images. The gang was wearing homemade metal armor at the time, in hopes that it would deflect bullets. He and his gang were crushed in a shoot-out with law enforcement in 1880 after failing to derail a police train. Kelly was an anti-authoritarian of Irish descent who became a bushranger (wandering robber) under the tutelage of Harry Power (played onscreen here by Russell Crowe), then waged war on Australian colonial police, partly as a result of ugly run-ins between Victorian police and the Kelly family. Chock full of over-the-top family drama involving Ah Ma and her mom, Jess is trying to forge her own identity as she navigates the ghosts of her family’s secrets. And Jess is going to be the “body” to help her do it. In life, Ah Ma was a spirit avatar of a mysterious deity called the Black Water Sister hellbent on settling a score against a gang boss. Then she starts the voice of her dead grandmother, Ah Ma. Jess is closeted, broke, and moving back to Malaysia, a country she left when she was a toddler. Black Water Sister by Zen ChoĪ reluctant medium fights gods, ghosts, gangsters, and grandmas in 21st century Penang contemporary fantasy. It stands out for its queer and trans themes, exploring gender and sexuality against a backdrop of a hybrid punk world. This visionary novel, first published in 1995, weaves dystopian tropes like technological domination, social media saturation, and sinister surveillance technologies into a sensitive portrait of one young woman’s quest for self-understanding. After meeting her estranged mother, she begins to explore her true identity. Set in the late 21st century dystopian world where humanity lives in underwater domes to escape climate change, it tells the tale of Momo, a celebrated dermal care technician who keeps to herself. What Leke didn't expect was for Grim, a berserker, to break through his berserker rage when he realizes Erica is his fated mate. Last we knew, she was shipped off to the Lindworm expedition by Jarl Leke to be killed. This is the beginning of Erica and Grim's story. This review is for Lucee Joie's contribution, Seized by the Alien Berserker. There's only so much you can do with 6 chapters and brief epilogue, however. I would have preferred a few more chapters though, and a bit more intense building within their coupling. This one was a quick read, but it answered my questions regarding this warrior. Though I hoped Quist and Sierra would one day get to be with his brethern, I get why that just wasn't possible right now. This brief Novella was a little intense, a whole Lotta Sweet, and just Sexy enough. I was always curious about this aquatic Warrior and wanted to know his story. Her story is called "Rescued From The Depths" and it's concerning the Drixonian Warrior "Quist" who we met briefly in the Freshas in Xavy and Tabitha's book I believe. I plan to make my way through the rest of this book eventually though. She was the only reason I bought this book. Written by the BEST Alien Sci-fi Romance Author EVER! Ms. So my rating on this 0.99 book is purely for one Novella within this book. Each woman attempted to be as independent as her era allowed, yet falling for the society mores expected of an upper crust Chilean family. This is most evident as Allende uses the same name over again for all four women in the family: Nivea, Clara, Blanca, Alba. The opus detailed their family saga in both good times and bad, reflecting on how the same mistakes repeated themselves through the generations. La Casa de Los Espiritus is a sweeping epic that spans three generations of Chilean women- Clara, Blanca, and Alba Del Valle Trueba- from post World War I up until the Pinochet coup which overthrew the Allende government (Isabel's uncle) in 1973. Handed down this gift, Allende admits that she has had a number of meaningful dreams over the years that have influenced both her writing and family life. She reveals that Clara represents her own grandmother: she also had the gift of being clairvoyant and communicating with all the spirits that entered her home by way of a three-legged table and tarot cards. Recently, I completed Allende's memoir The Sum of Our Days. Allende's writing is exceptional in both languages. In college, I was fortunate that La Casa de los Espiritus was required reading for one of my classes, so I read the prose a second time in Spanish. I remember how the first line "Barrabas came to us from the sea" left me captivated and eager to read on. House of the Spirits started my love affair with Isabel Allende's writing twenty years ago.
